Sarasota is the Gulf Coast town that pairs beach days with a real downtown. The barrier islands of Siesta Key, Lido Key, and Longboat Key hold the white-quartz sand and the sunsets, while the mainland holds the Ringling Museum, the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, Selby Gardens, the Sarasota Opera, and a Main Street of restaurants that fills every evening in season. Our Sarasota vacation rentals cover that mainland side of the bay: downtown and Rosemary District condos, pool homes in Gulf Gate, Palmer Ranch, and the neighborhoods off Siesta Drive, and family houses within 10 to 15 minutes of the beaches without island rates.
If you want to sleep on the sand itself, our Siesta Key vacation rentals and Lido Key vacation rentals pages cover the islands. Book direct with JZ Vacation Rentals and you deal with a real team, not a call center.
Staying on the mainland gives you the whole coast. Siesta Key Beach, a regular on national beach rankings, is a 10 to 15 minute drive; Lido Beach and St. Armands Circle are a short hop over the Ringling Bridge; Longboat Key stretches north from there. Back in town you have the Ringling’s circus and art museums, the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens on the bay, Mote Marine Aquarium, the Saturday farmers market downtown, and Myakka River State Park’s alligators and airboats 30 minutes inland. Sarasota Bradenton International Airport is about 15 minutes from downtown, and Tampa is an hour and a quarter north. For events, seasonal guides and area maps, see the official Visit Sarasota visitor site.
Sarasota is also one of the Gulf’s easier places to visit in shoulder season. Spring training brings the Orioles to Ed Smith Stadium in March, the beaches stay warm through November, and summer rates on pool homes drop while the water hits 85 degrees.
Mainland Sarasota is pool-home country: single-story ranches and newer builds with screened lanais and heated pools, usually with a garage and room for two or three cars, which the island condos rarely offer. Downtown and Bayfront condos trade the pool for walkability to Main Street and the Van Wezel. Pet-friendly options exist across both; each listing states its own pet policy and any fee on the property page.
February through April is peak season, with dry days in the 70s and 80s and the highest rates, plus Orioles spring training in March. October through early December is warm, quieter, and cheaper. Summer is hot with afternoon storms and the lowest prices; hurricane season runs June through November, so check cancellation terms if you book late summer.
Most mainland homes are 10 to 15 minutes by car from Siesta Key Beach or Lido Beach. Downtown condos are about 10 minutes from Lido via the Ringling Bridge. Each listing shows its neighborhood and a map on the property page, and our Siesta Key and Lido Key pages list the on-island homes.
Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) is about 15 minutes from downtown and the most convenient. Tampa International is roughly an hour and 15 minutes north and often has more nonstop options; St. Pete-Clearwater and Fort Myers are each about an hour to an hour and a half.
Several are, especially the mainland pool homes. Every listing shows its own pet policy and any pet fee on the property page, so check the details for the home you like before booking.
Yes. Siesta Key’s shallow, calm water suits young children, Mote Marine and the Ringling circus museum fill rainy days, and a mainland pool home gives a family more bedrooms and a kitchen for less than a beachfront condo.
Sarasota rentals are on the mainland: downtown, the Bayfront, and the residential neighborhoods behind the beaches. Siesta Key and Lido Key rentals are on the barrier islands, steps from the sand at island prices. All three are within 15 minutes of one another.
