Lido Key faces the Gulf of Mexico, with Longboat Key to the north, Bird Key and St. Armands Key to the east and Siesta Key to the south. Its sandy beaches face the Gulf, and Lido Key Beach is described as a more private, more relaxing beach than the more popular Siesta Key Beach.
John Ringling bought St. Armands Key in 1917, laid out its circular shopping district and was the first to drive across the new bridge in 1926. Today the circle holds more than 130 stores and restaurants around a central park, along with the Circus Ring of Fame, whose more than 150 bronze plaques honor circus artists and executives, among them Paul Binder, Bello Nock and Nik Wallenda.
The island has numerous sandy beaches facing the Gulf of Mexico. South Lido Park has both a beach and a woodland trail, so a swim and a shaded walk fit into the same outing.
In Sarasota, The Ringling campus on Bay Shore Road includes the art museum, the Circus Museum, Ca’ d’Zan and the historic Asolo Theater. Mote Marine Laboratory, founded in 1955 and based on City Island in Sarasota since 1978, also runs a public aquarium, Mote SEA.
In February 1926, a causeway built by John Ringling linked Lido Key and St. Armands Key. In 1940 the Lido Beach Casino, designed by Ralph Twitchell, was built as a WPA project, with a ballroom, restaurants, shops, a pool and cabanas; it stood until 1969. The two-story Lido Beach Hotel had arrived by barge in sections in 1932. Neighboring St. Armands Key takes its name from Charles St. Amand, who bought land there in 1893; a misspelling in the land deeds stuck. On October 2, 1955, about 100 African American residents of Sarasota’s Newtown neighborhood held a wade-in at Lido Beach to protest its segregation, in a protest organized by Sarasota NAACP president Neil Humphrey Sr.
Lido Key vacation rentals sit between two neighboring keys. Longboat Key lies to the north, reached by State Road 789 from St. Armands Circle, and Siesta Key lies to the south, so a beach day on a different island can fit into the week.
Weddings and other private parties often book a section of Lido Beach for their guests, so if your trip centers on a beach wedding or a family celebration, reserve Lido Key vacation rentals as soon as the date is set. The Lido Harbour South condo listing notes that its pool is heated from November 15 to April 15.
From downtown Sarasota, the John Ringling Causeway crosses Sarasota Bay to St. Armands Circle, and Lido Key is just beyond it.
The Banyan Retreat listing puts St. Armands Circle 0.1 miles away and Lido Beach access 0.2 miles away, and the Tranquility listing puts the circle 0.3 miles away and Lido Beach 0.5 miles away. When you compare Lido Key vacation rentals, check the guest count and bedroom layout on each property page so the house fits your group.
