St. Charles is the oldest city on the Missouri River and the most walkable weekend in the St. Louis region. Its brick-paved Main Street runs ten blocks of 19th-century storefronts, restaurants, wine bars, and shops down to Frontier Park, where Lewis and Clark set out in May 1804 and where the Katy Trail now begins its run across the state. St. Charles works for three kinds of trips. Weekenders come for Main Street itself: dinner and live music on Friday, the farmers market and antique shops on Saturday, and a walk or bike ride on the Katy Trail along the river on Sunday. Families and groups use it as a quieter base for St. Louis, with the Gateway Arch, Forest Park, the zoo, City Museum, and Busch Stadium all within 30 to 40 minutes and free parking back at the house. Business and relocation travelers stay for the proximity to the airport, the corporate offices along Highway 40 in Chesterfield and Maryland Heights, and the Streets of St. Charles dining district by the Ameristar casino. The calendar matters here. The Festival of the Little Hills fills Main Street in August, Oktoberfest follows in September, and from Thanksgiving to Christmas the district turns into Christmas Traditions, with costumed carolers, Santas from around the world, and horse-drawn carriages on the brick streets. Book early for those weekends.
Frenchtown, just north of Main Street, is the historic residential district with the shortest walk to the riverfront. New Town at St. Charles is a planned community of canals, lakes, and front porches a few minutes east. Cottleville and St. Peters add family neighborhoods along Highway 94, and Wentzville, O’Fallon, and Warrenton sit further west on Interstate 70. Missouri wine country begins 30 minutes southwest in Defiance and Augusta, reachable by car or by bike on the Katy Trail.
St. Louis Lambert International Airport is about 20 minutes from most St. Charles rentals via Interstate 70. Downtown St. Louis, the Gateway Arch, and Busch Stadium are roughly 30 minutes, and Forest Park and the zoo about 30 to 35 minutes.
Some homes in Frenchtown and the historic district are within a 10 to 15 minute walk of Main Street. Others in New Town, Cottleville, and St. Peters are a 5 to 15 minute drive. Each listing states its neighborhood and shows a map on the property page.
Late April through June and September through October offer the best weather for Main Street and the Katy Trail. Christmas Traditions, from the Friday after Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve, is the most popular season, and the Festival of the Little Hills in August draws the largest single-weekend crowds.
