Coleville is the last California town before the Nevada line on Highway 395, which makes it a natural base for three very different days out. North, Topaz Lake straddles the state line about ten miles away with trout fishing, boating, and a lakeside casino on the Nevada shore. South, Highway 108 climbs to Sonora Pass, one of the highest paved passes in the Sierra, with Leavitt Meadow, the Pacific Crest Trail, and the West Walker River canyon along the way. Further south on 395, Bridgeport, Bodie State Historic Park, Mono Lake, and the Tioga Pass entrance to Yosemite are all within a day trip.
Compared with the resort towns of Mammoth Lakes or South Lake Tahoe, Coleville is uncrowded and affordable. You trade nightlife for dark skies and river sound, and you are still roughly an hour from South Lake Tahoe and about an hour and a half from Reno-Tahoe International Airport.
Coleville is in Antelope Valley in northern Mono County, on U.S. Highway 395 just south of the Nevada state line. It sits between Topaz Lake to the north and the Highway 108 turnoff to Sonora Pass to the south, about an hour from South Lake Tahoe and an hour and a half from Reno.
Fishing on the West Walker River and Topaz Lake, hiking and backpacking from Leavitt Meadow and Sonora Pass, hot springs near Bridgeport, off-road and ATV routes in the Sweetwater Mountains, and day trips to Bodie, Mono Lake, and the east side of Yosemite via Tioga Pass in summer.
Late spring through early fall. Sonora Pass and Tioga Pass usually open by late May or June and close with the first heavy snow, often in November. Summer brings warm days and cool nights at 5,000 feet. Fall color along the West Walker River peaks in October. Winter is quiet, and Highway 395 stays open.
South Lake Tahoe is roughly an hour northwest via Highway 395 and Highway 207 over Kingsbury Grade. Reno-Tahoe International Airport is about an hour and a half north on 395. Mammoth Lakes is about two hours south, and the Tioga Pass entrance to Yosemite is about an hour and a half in season.

Not for the highways. Highway 395 is a paved, year-round road and Coleville itself is at valley level. Carry chains in winter, since Caltrans can require them on 395 and on the passes during storms. High-clearance or four-wheel drive helps only on the dirt roads into the Sweetwater Mountains and some backcountry trailheads.
